Married Daughters Cannot Be Denied Compassionate Appointment: Supreme Court Strikes Down Bihar's Discriminatory Policy

A two-judge Bench of the Supreme Court has held that a Bihar government policy restricting compassionate appointment to only "divorced or deserted" daughters — while placing no such condition on sons — is arbitrary and unconstitutional. The Court set aside a Patna High Court judgment that had upheld the rejection, ruling that marital status can never be the basis for denying a daughter's claim to compassionate appointment.
